McConalogue welcomes funding for Donegal islands’ capital works

Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, and Donegal T.D., Charlie McConalogue, has today (Tuesday, May 24th) confirmed allocation of €136,414 for capital works on Donegal islands infrastructure projects.

The funding will see improvements made to the access road to Island Roy, the helipad and slipway design for Toraigh Island, and an environmental study for Machaire Rabhartaigh pier. Donegal received the highest funding allocation.

Commenting, Minister McConalogue said “Investment in Donegal’s islands is crucially important for residents, for inshore fishers, for businesses and for tourism and I am happy to confirm that Donegal’s islands received the highest level of capital funding in this announcement. It is essential that we continue to invest in rural Ireland and its infrastructure. Thank you to Donegal County Council and to all the community groups for their ongoing work. “

The funding has been allocated to Cork, Mayo and Donegal County Councils as follows:

Cork County Council €90,891
Mayo County Council €58,500
Donegal County Council €136,414

The funding from the Department of Rural and Community Development will cover up to 90% of the capital cost for these projects while the local authorities will provide the balance.

This is the latest tranche of capital funding for island infrastructure projects in 2022, with over €2m of grants announced nationally earlier in the year and a further funding announcement in respect of other islands expected later in the year.
